CONVERGENT NETWORKS ANNOUNCES AVAILABLITY OF THE COMMANDO™

New Compact, Powerful Media Gateway Provides Economical
VoIP Capabilities for Carriers

LOWELL, Mass., May 14 , 2004 - Convergent Networks today announced availability of the Convergent Commando™ media gateway, a compact, powerful and low-cost solution for delivering Voice over IP (VoIP) capabilities to carriers. The new six-slot chassis provides carriers with the ability to quickly deploy IP Voice services to their customers to generate new revenues.

The Commando's TDM to IP voice call interworking functionality allows carriers with investments in legacy equipment to deliver VoIP services by co-locating the Commando switch with existing Class 4/5 switches to create a virtual VoIP gateway. The Commando is also an ideal solution for carriers that need immediate, low-cost VoIP capabilities. Further, the new switch enables carriers to seamlessly interconnect and "hand-off" traffic with other domestic and international carriers using VoIP, rather than traditional circuit switching.

The Commando employs a six-slot chassis with a 10 Gigabit switching architecture. Two slots are dedicated to the redundant control processor, while the remaining slots are available for IP service units, and TDM service units (TSU-SP) that each house individual switch fabrics for maximum performance. The Commando's powerful Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) support a complete set of voice codecs, including G.711, G.726, G.729, G.723.1, and iBLC, for the delivery of carrier-class voice services. The platform also features built in echo cancellation on all ports, silence suppression, and comfort noise generation. In addition, a major feature of the Commando is its ability to provide transcoding service, which compresses and decompresses voice streams to match end-point device capabilities.

The Commando works in conjunction with Convergent Networks' PacketMatrix Controller (PMC™) to direct call processing through the most efficient path in a large, distributed network - routing calls from a packet network to the PSTN and from the PSTN to a packet network. The PMC holds routing and service intelligence for Commando gateways, acts as a mediation point between IP applications and AIN applications, and peering point to other next generation call management and application elements in the network.

The Convergent Commando™ pricing begins at $199k.
